SGS Philippines Opens Plywood Testing Laboratory
SGS Philippines, Inc., the Philippine affiliate of the SGS Group, has been granted accreditation by the Philippine Accreditation Bureau (PAB) of the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) in the field of Mechanical Testing of Plywood last April 24, 2015. This is after an assessment after which SGS PH was determined as conforming to the requirements of the PNS ISO/IEC 17025:2005 and the PAB conditions for laboratory accreditation. Two (2) SGS laboratory personnel were also accredited as Approved Signatories for plywood testing reports.
In line with these developments, SGS opens its Plywood Testing Laboratory for Type I (Exterior or Marine Type) and Type II (Interior or Ordinary Type) on June 2015. Specific tests or measurements will include; Shear Test after Cyclic Boil Test, Wood Failure after Cyclic Boil Test, Moisture Content, Dimensional Measurement for Type I and Delamination Test, Moisture Content, Dimensional Measurement for Type II, all in reference to PNS 196:2000 Standard Method/Reference Standard. The laboratory provides the local industry – manufacturers, importers, and traders – with a third party testing facility for product quality review and for compliance to regulatory requirements.
The entry of SGS in plywood testing is expected to accelerate the testing of not only the locally-manufactured plywood but will also facilitate local verification of imported plywood originating from China, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, and other sources. The faster testing and completion of regulatory requirements helps in the ready availability of plywood in the market for end-users such as the construction industry, furniture producers, traders, and other consumers.
Plywood is currently included in the list of Philippine National Standards (PNS) for Construction Materials, which has a mandatory requirement for product testing under the Philippine Standard (PS) or Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) Certification Mark scheme. Both the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) and the Bureau of Customs (BoC) continuously encourage the public to be vigilant in the purchase of plywood and to look for the Philippine Standard (PS) Quality or Safety Certification Mark License or Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) issued to importers or manufacturers.
