Sumisetsu Philippines, Inc. (SPI), an affiliate of Sumitomo Densetsu Co., Ltd. of Japan, is the first organization to achieve the newly released ISO 9001:2015 certification in the Philippines.

SPI is an electrical and mechanical contractor specializing in design, installation, and maintenance services such as electrical and mechanical facilities of buildings and factories. Established in the Philippines in 1990, SPI started their journey to ISO 9001 Quality Management System (QMS) certification in 2001. After undergoing ISO 9001 training, SPI successfully achieved ISO 9001 QMS certification on December 1, 2003, with SGS Philippines as their certifying body. The company has maintained their certification since then.

Mr. Takuro Suzuki, President of SPI, has always been supportive of the company’s endeavor to continual improvement driven by an effective QMS. He believes that obtaining ISO 9001:2015 QMS certification is beneficial to an organization especially if it has fully understood and integrated the Plan-Do-Check-Act cycle.

SPI identified the addition of risk-based thinking as one of the most valuable changes in the new version of the said management system. It has helped their team to clearly identify and to control both internal and external threats to SPI.

Organizations that are currently ISO 9001:2008 certified have three years, from formal publication of ISO 9001:2015, to transfer to the new version of the standard. Based on the current publication schedule, this transition period will end in September 2018.
