March 4 marked the beginning of SGS Philippines and Gawad Kalinga Community Development Foundation, Inc. (GK) Partnership through the Orange Heart Program, the local umbrella brand for in-house employee driven CSR programs of SGS in the Philippines.

Gawad Kalinga (GK) is a Philippine-based movement that aims to end poverty for 5 million families in the country by 2024 through restoring the dignity of the poor by creating an enabling environment.

Aimed at encouraging all SGS business lines in the Philippines to spearhead and own at least one CSR program for 2016, Orange Heart 2016 kicked off with the Minerals Division and Multi-Laboratory Team signing an agreement with Gawad Kalinga (GK) to do the testing of the Virgin Coconut Oil produce of local housewives from Monte De Oro GK Village, Aroroy Masbate.

The town of Aroroy (Al-Oroy its former name), which came from the Spanish word for gold-"oro" is a small town where one of our Minerals Laboratory is located.

Part of the partnership is also for employees of SGS Minerals division based in Aroroy to help the local community be educated about proper sampling and handling of their local produce. With the improved capability of the housewives making the virgin coconut oil, the team hopes to ultimately make a difference in uplifting the livelihood in Monte De Oro and also promoting women employment in the said community.

For 2016, it is the thrust of the HR Team to further facilitate Orange Heart initiatives within the organization and make this as a vehicle for SGS and the employees to “give back” to our community and to uphold the spirit of volunteerism amongst our people.

Here’s what our employees have to say about CSR in SGS:

“I like participating in CSR activities because these events expose me to the reality of life outside of SGS and they give me an opportunity to exercise my obligations as a citizen of our country. Being part of the team that does management system audits and certifications on environment, health, safety and social accountability (to name a few), I feel more obliged to contribute to the community in any way I can, and participating in CSRs of SGS provides me a venue for this, apart from giving more meaning to my work.” - John L. Lazaro (SGS CSR Testimonials 2014)

“I find some fulfilment or rather personal satisfaction that I have contributed to the welfare of other people who are not necessarily connected with our company. Probably it is the effect of the internalization of the work that we do, wherein even if it is a business, I/we believe that our services are for the betterment of the society through integrity-based programs, e.g. testing, certification, inspection, etc.

Further, there will always be big and wide gaps out there where the society, which by itself alone, will not be able to fill up. So again I/we as member/s of a responsible company has to stand up and be counted in any way (however big/small) we can do lessen those gaps.  I am sure that all our colleagues who understands well the things that we do as a company will feel the same.” - Gerry Panopio (SGS CSR Testimonials 2014)
