The Philippines boasts of its abundant fish production. Aside from ranking 7th among the world’s top fish producing countries in 2012, the country also boasts as one of the major tuna producers in the Western and Central Pacific Ocean regions, according to fisheries experts.

And as the fishing sector continues to thrive, industry key players are now challenged to better manage the country’s aquatic resources by implementing policies against illegal fishing, adapting to new technology and expanding the market.

This year, SGS in the Philippines supports the 19th National Tuna Congress which will be held in General Santos City from September 6 to 8.

With the theme, “The Philippine Tuna Industry: Strengthened. Responsive. Competitive”, this year’s Tuna congress aims to discuss relevant issues and concerns surrounding the fishing industry, finalize the draft of the National Tuna Management Plan, as well as redefine the working conditions of our fishermen.

“We would like to help the industries we serve, in this case the seafood industry, in ensuring that all of our products for export are safe and of good quality since these products carry our nation’s name,” said Jose Decolongon, SGS PH Agriculture, Food and Life Division Manager.

Through our global network, SGS North America Associate Director for Food Kevin Edwards will fly in for the event as key speaker to discuss the US Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) considering that the United States of America is one of the country’s top importers of seafood products.

The FSMA is a law focusing on the effective prevention of food safety issues in the US food supply. Those who export to the U.S. are obliged to comply with the said law.
