INTRAMUROS, Manila—the Bureau of Immigration (BI) announced its successful transition from ISO 9001:2008 to the 2015 version during their 78th Founding Anniversary last September 7 at the BI’s head office in Manila.

The BI was awarded the certification for achieving quality standards in conducting entry and exit formalities for arriving and departing foreign nationals at the Ninoy Aquino International Airports, and for Extension of stay for Temporary Visitor’s Visa of the Tourist Visa Section.

The certification, which was awarded during their anniversary celebration led by BI Commisioner Jaime Morente, was a “major achievement of the Bureau”. “It is through the efforts of the valiant men and women of the BI that we have transitioned to ISO 9001:2015. This shows that the quality of our service is indeed world class,” said Morente.

An ISO certification is an internationally-recognized standard certifying an agency’s ability to consistently provide service that meets customer and applicable statutory and regulatory requirements.

It can be recalled that the BI was the first to be certified among the attached agencies of the Department of Justice. The Bureau was initially awarded an ISO 9001:2008 Certification last September 2016, which was transitioned to the 2015 version and expanded to include extension of stay last August 31.

“The awarding of our ISO 9001:2015 Certification is very timely as it coincides with our 78th anniversary. It only proves that our services are commendable and are at par with our foreign counterparts,” said Morente. “Expanding this to include tourist visa extension ensures that we welcome tourists in the country through quality public service,” he added.

During said celebration, Morente also hailed the achievements of the Bureau throughout the year. “We are proud to have launched the E-Gates at our airports which made immigration assessments faster and more efficient. We have also strengthened our border control by hiring additional immigration officers to man our airports and border crossing stations. We have also intensified our drive against illegal aliens and fugitive foreigners hiding in the Philippines, and have commenced the construction of a bigger and better Immigration building along Macapagal [boulevard].” he stated.

Morente said that these efforts are part of a series of improvement projects for the BI by the current administration.

The BI, which was founded when the Philippine Immigration Act was signed into law in September 3, 1940, is an attached agency of the Department of Justice.
