An Urge to Combat Piracy in Achieving Consumer Confidence
“Around $1.8 trillion every year is being lost due to counterfeiting. Fake products destroy 10 percent of top line revenue and erode the credibility of brands. Worldwide counterfeiting grows at 15.6 percent each year,” said Engr. Ryan Gonzales, SGS Philippines Inc.
The Export Marketing Bureau of Phil Export has invited SGS Philippines, Inc. to be one of the resource speakers for the webinar on "Securing Certification for Wearables and Other Lifestyle Products" last December 21, 2020. SGS Philippines was represented by Engr. Ryan Gonzales, Consumer and Retail Technical Sales Specialist under the Consumer Goods and Retail Division.
The session focused on how to ensure consumers' confidence on the products that they use thru legitimate certifications on wearables and lifestyle products. Having the MSMEs in the lifestyle sector as the main audience of the webinar, core ideas on different certifications have been discussed by Engr. Gonzales to support the MSMEs in becoming more confident and competitive in entering the international market.
There is an urge to encourage several brands, resellers and retailers specifically those who have established their marketplace in specific ecommerce platforms to ensure that their products meet the regulatory and safety requirements for the benefit of their consumers. Engr. Gonzales emphasized that brands thus need stricter self-regulation due to a lack of global intellectual property laws. Safety testing of products across all industries like high-end / luxury products, electrical and electronic, e-commerce, pharmaceuticals, hardlines, cosmetics, personal care and household is very important to prevent product recalls and the possible cost of fine and sanctions that may arise.
SGS has already looked at the problems of brand protection and has created and sourced solutions for all the issues that exist within the supply chain. In addition to in-house services, SGS also provides an eco-system of solutions that utilizes the latest technology to give you access to real-time data on products. Engr. Gonzales has also explained the repercussions of a product being recalled. It is not just the brand image that is being destroyed but as well as the reputation of the company given that the company produces and distributes inefficient, unsafe or defective products to the general public. Acquiring such brand protection or safety testing and certification of products do serve as the safety net especially if the company intends to export products with certain regulations imposed.
